What is your favorite race to put on?
Probably BASH Winter Tri because it doesn’t take all week to set up
and in a very short period of time, it became the National
Championship event.
What got you into race directing? I’ve volunteered for a few races and
it tires me out just helping out for a few hours. How do you do it
time after time?
Giving something back and hopefully puting my own little spin on local
racing. It’s a lot of work, but the rewards are great when you walk
through the Expo and people want to tell you how much fun they had or
how well the event was put together. It tends to make you forget the
small failures that nobody saw.
We all realize that what you do is tough to say the least, but is
there anything you wish triathletes would do to help out on race day?
Register in advance, plan for their race, and use a checklist to keep
them organized on race day… and BRING YOUR HELMET!
What is the most helpful thing triathletes do to help out on race day?
They don’t litter and they keep aid station materials near the aid
station. Second most helpful thing is they don’t crash on the course
somewhere.
Do you have any more races lined up for 2011?
So far, just our three events. The BASH Winter Tri in January, the
Pride Day 5K in June, and the BAM Triathlon weekend.
What does the off season entail for you?
Off Season… Is there an off season? Really, I have no off season,
for directing and for training. I have events in the winter and summer
that I do and that I direct, so there is really no off season. In
between events, I plan for other events, think of new ideas, and train
more.
Do you do any races yourself? What kind?
Yes, I like all sorts of races. Would like to start getting into
cycling, and I enjoy triathlons. I’ll be training for my 5th Ironman
in Coeur d’Alene in June. Only a year to go!
What is your most popular race or one that is guaranteed or almost
guaranteed to sell out? How soon does it usually sell out?
Most popular BAM event is probably the BAM Olympic distance and hasn’t
sold out yet. I suspect as the word of mouth spreads, we’ll get closer
to that. For now, we will just watch them all grow. Guaranteed sell
out other races would be the M-dot branded events, and the local all
women’s events that are very popular and good quality events.
Why are you so bad ass?
I don’t really think I am. I think my events are what they are because
they reflect the personality of me and my partners. We work hard to
put forth our own image in what we do. We believe in going big and
going home, which comes at a price, but can you really put a price on
trying to do good things?
Speaking of Bad Ass, tell me about your Bad Ass category.
It’s a great race consisting of three events in 24 hours. Last year
our Bad Ass event was dropped because of lightning on the course. We
only have 100 spots for these races. The bad asses will do our off
road duathlon on Friday night, then our long course Oly distance
triathlon Saturday night, then finish off with the 10K trail run on
Saturday night. Those guys and gals are REALLY bad asses. Just seemed
like a fun way to distinguish those who are truly a little mental and
want a challenge. I wish I could compete in it. I love the unique
challenge, which is what I look for in an event.
It seems to me that there is no real shortage of races which is a good
thing. Is there a race that may be new that still has not caught the
eye as much as other races that you have?
NOT! Yeah, I think that the surplus of events, with new ones coming
all the time, is a good thing. It makes us all produce events that
have a personality, or the weaker ones will not survive (events).
People will have great choices and lots of events to not only plan for
and look forward to, but also to fall back on in case their A-game
events don’t pan out for them. Besides, extra races give ME a place to
race as well. I don’t know if WARP has another Triathlon in our
future, as far as a separate event, but we always have new ideas, so
just keep your eyes out for something new and different and chances
are high we might be behind it in one way or anther.
